Bang Po Beach
Bang Po is far from Samui’s pulsating northeast beaches at Chaweng – and the further you get from them, the quieter the island becomes. The main road along the top of the island passes two of Samui’s most famous beaches, Bophut Beach and Maenam Beach, yet few people take notice of or even know the name of this last beach along the northern shore, Bang Po.
Yet here is exactly what a good number of people are seeking; a classic, tropical beach with almost no people on it. Even in the peak season Bang Po generally has only a few more bodies than shown in our photos.
The beach is attractive, with the classic, palm-fringed look, although it is long, and without any other features. Bang Po remains one of the least developed stretches of sand on the island. For those holidaymakers looking for real ‘chill-out’ peace and quiet, without the need for nightlife, shops and restaurants nearby, the few resorts scattered along here might be just right.
The road at the back of the beach is the link between the island’s administrative centre and main town, Nathon, and the busy tourist beaches on the east coast. From here it’s only a 10-minute drive to Nathon with its shops, restaurants, markets and services like banks, ATMs, pharmacies, coffee shops and travel agents. Also, along the road leading into Nathon are a number of beachfront restaurants that serve the local Thai community. If you want real Thai food, head this way, not towards the tourist beaches.
